Burst of Craftiness

No, no…I’m not getting into trouble. I’m just *making* things.
After debating what to get/use for a changing table for baby #2 (I’d sold the one I had for Maya, but still have the crib), we picked out a dresser-changer combo. It arrived, and in a flurry of do-it-yourselfiness, I got it assembled. [...]

Running conversation

Maya to her brown bear and cat bus:
“You dry? Did you pee on the potty? Good. Good, good, good! You stay dry!”
Maya in general, to no one in particular:
“No more diapers for Maya! Stay clean and dry and get FRUIT SNACKS!”
Maya to me, just after using the potty:
“I dry. [...]

This-n-that

Yesterday, after watching Cinderella yet again, Maya started calling me “Mother.” As in, the way Grisella or Anastasia might say it. This morning, she asked me to talk like stepmother.
I’d find it outright disturbing, except that this morning, when Maya was play-acting to be me, I asked her what Mama says. “Mmmm. [...]

Oh, to be three.

The emotional rollercoaster of three is unlike anything I’ve ever encountered. We missed out on Trick-or-Treating (as IF Maya needs more sweets?), but did indulge in a princess dress. Maya was in preschooler heaven. She spun in circles. She admired her sparkle shoes. She asked me to dance with [...]

Maya’s Current Favorite Movie

The Princess Bride. In the past few days, Maya has decided that she has no use for The Wiggles, but that Westley and Buttercup are her new best buds. Guess I should pick up some Monty Python to see if she’ll dig that, too.

Oh, the ego…and the cuteness

The drawer where I keep Maya’s dresses is well within her reach. The past few mornings, she’s grabbed a dress and pulled it on (usually inside out and/or backwards) over her jammies.
This morning, she came out, announcing to me, “Look at me! Maya is BEA-YOU-TIFUL!”
A moment after I snapped this picture, she [...]

She said what?

Maya: I want THIS one. (Holding up Aladdin case. We’ve watched Aladdin already at least 6-7x this week. Ugh.)
Me: Maya, let’s do something else. Mama’s tired of that movie. How about Toy Story?
Maya: How about NO.
*snort*
I can’t complain. She comes by it honestly.

I broke it, apparently.

Maya: Apple? Apple?
Me: Sure, you can have an apple.
Maya: Whole apple!
Me: No, babe. Last time we did that, you took five bites, then threw the rest away. You can have apple slices. (Sliced apple.)
Maya: APPPPPLLLLLE! APPPPLLLLLE!
Me: Here it is. (Handing her apple slices on a cutting board.)
Maya: NO! [...]

Contact dermatitis

I’ve never been particularly cautious about pre-washing Maya’s new clothing, but when I bought a bunch of new 3T pjs and whatnot last week, I washed every single piece, because my gut said so.
The dress Maya wore today, however, wasn’t part of that purchase; it had been sitting in the back of the closet for [...]

This is what happens when I let Maya choose her own clothing in the morning. Purple dress? Purple dress?
You want to wear this dress, Maya?
YEAH!
Note that her sunglasses are pink. She chose those too, over the tortoiseshell ones I suggested. Like it or not, I am most definitely the parent [...]

Sing. Sing a song.

Making up your own lyrics is not only optional; it’s encouraged.

There’s something to be said for a 37-year-old man who had no exposure to kiddie shows/music until we met…and who now sings Wiggles songs even more than I do (even if he still doesn’t know the words, he sings them anyway). I found a [...]

Yes, yes. I’ve been quite the blog slacker, no?
Maya continues to morph into this amazing and astonishing creature. She’s funny, smart as a whip, and can charm nearly anyone she meets.
Well check with new pedi

This morning, Maya had her first visit with a pediatrician here in Santa Fe. I don’t adore him (yet) the way I did Dr. Dawson in Colorado Springs, but I don’t dislike him either. I had to apologize to Maya for being *wrong* about no new shots. Allison & MikeNovember 24, 2006

Why yes…we did go through with it!
Thanks a million to everyone who came to celebrate with us — you made it quite a memorable evening!
After I start to get professional photos (so far, all we have are snapshots captured by family), I’ll post a link to a slideshow on Flickr.

shower (and bye-bye shower! when I’m washing her hair)

On teaching manners

Nigel has all kinds of words, and we hear them a lot. All except ‘please’ and ‘thank you’. Hmm. Now, I usually have more success with ‘please’, so I’ll often start with it. (Why is please easier? It’s all in the motivation. “Want this cookie?
