Well check with new pedi

This morning, Maya had her first visit with a pediatrician here in Santa Fe. I don’t adore him (yet) the way I did Dr. Dawson in Colorado Springs, but I don’t dislike him either. I had to apologize to Maya for being *wrong* about no new shots. She got her second flu shot (I didn’t know they’re supposed to get two their first winter?) and her first Hep-A shot (it’s regionally needed, and the doc said it’s going national anyway). The big news…

Maya’s on the chart for weight!

She wasn’t quite as heavy as I’d hoped/thought, but still, she’s gained more than 2 pounds in the past 3 months, huge for her. She’s also 1.5 inches taller — no wonder she seems so tall now! New stats:

Weight: 23lb, 4oz (5th percentile, 2lb 1oz since early Oct)
Height: 35.5″ (75th percentile, 1.5″ since Oct)
Head: 45cm = 17.75″ (5th percentile, .25″ since Oct)

Dang. Can you say, “growth spurt?”

Teeth

It’s so very difficult to get my fingers into Maya’s mouth anymore. Then, if I do manage it, she tries to bite. I did, however, manage to get a quick pseudo count of teeth earlier today, using an M&M as an incentive.

New:

  • Upper 1yo molars, all four points
  • Lower 1yo molars, at least 2 points, possibly all four
  • Upper side incisors, right and left (may have not completely broken the skin yet, but I can see them
  • I *think* I might also see the shadow of an upper bicuspid (canine)

Is it any wonder we’ve been having sleep issues lately?

Seven

Tooth #7 has arrived: the left upper molar. Maya’s upstairs right now, crying, well…like a baby.

Poor kid. She’s so miserable, and yet, there’s been plenty of time for the Tylenol to kick in. Guess I’m going to go get her out of her room and give up the idea of “me” time. Again.

SIGH.

Tooth #6

With all of the other updates, I knew I was forgetting something!

Tooth #6 made the beginning of its appearance on Saturday (or was that Friday?). It’s the upper right one-year-old molar; this kid is getting her teeth in a really odd order. So, scroll to the bathtub picture a few posts below, and you can see her first five (two on the top, three on the bottom)…and now, a molar. Weird!

15 Month Checkup

Maya’s been a-growin’! I definitely knew she was taller…many of my favorites of her pants have suddenly become high-waters.

Weight: 17 pounds, 6.4 ounces (up 2 pounds since 12 months, still below 5th percentile)
Height: 30.75 inches (up 2.25 inches since 12 monhts, jumping to the 60th percentile!)
Head: 17 inches (up .25 inches, still below the 5th percentile)

She’s still a skinny-mini. Now, she’s just a skinny-mini above average height. Uh-oh…wonder if she’ll be taller than me someday? Guess since I’m only 5′3″, that wouldn’t exactly be difficult.

Four!

Tooth number four (top center left) has FINALLY made its breakthrough today. As a result (no teething pain), Maya is bouncing off the walls today.

At the moment, she’s playing tug with a bleached prefold diaper (I don’t mind that — they’re not as soft as unbleached, so I doubt I’ll use them anyway) with Clay, and LAUGHING her head off. The dogs keep going back and forth between playing with her and each other. Either way, Maya is delighted.

1-Year Checkup

Maya’s pedi visit was pretty much a nonevent today…she was weighed and measured (still itty, duh), then evaluated for development (right on track, not ahead or behind - duh again), then two shots. This time we did DTaP and Comvax (I think?), which brings us about to where most 6-month-olds are with their vaxes. While I am vaccinating, I’m doing so slowly, and usually allowing no more than two shots at a time. As she’s getting older, I may pick up the pace a bit, simply because we’ve had exactly ZERO reaction to shots so far.

Maya is still tiny. Seriously tiny. She has, though, moved upward in height.

Height: 28.5″ / 30th percentile
Head: 16.75″ / below the 5th
Weight: 15 pounds, 6.4 ounces / WAY below the 5th

She’s still healthy, so the doc isn’t concerned too much about her weight. Even with the two shots, she fussed for like 10 seconds, then was fine as soon as she was no longer restrained! Tonight (for her bday party with family), she was her normal, perky, into-everything self, except maybe a little heavy eyed at times.

Nine Months

Has it really been that long? How is it possible that it seems like yesterday AND like a lifetime ago that you came into my life?

I’ve now known you for nearly a month longer ouside the womb than inside — 8 months and 2 days passed between learning about your existence and giving birth to you. You’re more fun every day, and with each month that passes you change more and more rapidly. I thought that babies changed the most early on, then things slowed down…boy was I wrong about that! One of the songs I sing to you (sheesh, I should probably learn ALL of the words) is “Getting to Know You.” Finding out who you are is thrilling!

At this moment, you’re sleeping peacefully in your crib (knock on wood) while I wrap up my day, and put off washing the dishes. Only two weeks ago, your sleeping the the crib was impossible because you were teething and utterly ~desperate~ to have me hold you.

Yes, you have teeth now! Two of them popped through on your lower gums last week. So far, you’ve been pretty good about not biting me, which honestly, is in your benefit. Biting isn’t funny, and it ends your dinner. Please don’t continue with the “I’ll bite you so you put me down” routine…just stop sucking and smile, and I’ll get the point.

You’re all over the place now, and moving faster with every day that passes. Less than two weeks ago, I could set you down and be reasonably certain that when I came back, you’d be within a few feet of where I placed you. Now? Fuhgeddaboutit! You’re exploring the house, terrorizing the dogs (who make you giggle), and eating any and every piece of stray lint/paper/dog hair you find on the floor. What an inspiration you’re becoming! My house has never been cleaner. (grin)

You still charm every person you meet. Seriously, if you’re not the prettiest little baby girl ever, you’re darned close. We wander up and down the aisle in the grocery store (where you now sit in the cart, so you can have a better view) and you babble to me, telling me all about your day. Ba-ba-lala-blah-blah-da-da. It’s serious stuff. Keep trying, and someday, I might even actually understand you. I don’t tell you now, but you know when I answer you? I’m totally faking it. I don’t have a clue what you’re going on about, other than that it’s cute.

Sometimes I worry that you’ll develop a hangup that Mama only likes to take you out for all the positive attention she gets. Of course, the very fact that I worry about things like that likely means that I’m doing fine.

We’ve started doing “real” hikes finally! While we walk along the trails, I try to point out the sights, sounds, and smells…and remind you that before long, you’ll get to carry yourself on the trail! For now, I’m more than happy to be your own personal pack-animal. This morning, as you, the dogs, and I passed a man on the trail, he commented, “that’s quite a load you have there!” My reply, “Yup…I’ve got a sack of sugar on my back!” I get sappy like that about you.

Last time we went to see the doctor, you were barely eating cereal. These days, you eat anything that’s not nailed down, both food and non-food. On the food front, you love oatmeal. Oh, how you love oatmeal. You also love chocolate — anything sweet for that matter. Other food: you’ll eat pretty much anything I share with you, other than jarred baby vegetables. I agree with you that those are gross; why eat that when you can have fresh broccoli off mama’s plate? Today, you tried pad thai, and did great, even with the bit of spiciness. A tiny piece of an Andes mint *did* help for after, though. :)

There are so many things to remember, I couldn’t possibly touch on them all. I just hope that journaling our lives here will give you something to look back on someday. What you should know, more than anything, is that you’re the best thing I’ve ever done, and you’re the best part of my life, PERIOD. You inspire me to become the best me I can be, not only for my own good, but also so I can set a healthy example for you.

~~~~~~~~~Doctor Visit Stats~~~~~~~~~
Weight: 14 pounds, 3.2 ounces (not even on the chart)
Length: 26.5 inches (20th percentile)
Head: 16.5 inches (5th percentile)
For all the hoo-hah about growth spurts, you’re still TINY. I was off by a full pound in what I’d expected. Your doctor’s comment: “Well, if you’d tie her to a chair, maybe she’d gain more weight, but I think we’d rather she crawl.”
You got three shots today, but the piece of Andes mint I saved from lunch seemed to help you get past being upset about it…although you turned nearly purple during.
One glitch: left hip pop. We’ve been referred to an orthopedist, and I have a call in to get an appointment. This might explain your push with the right, drag with the left mode of crawling. Then again, it might not. I’ll look it up on the Internet to see what I can learn, of course.
Update: Maya will see the orthopedic doctor next Friday, July 1.
So many parents push their kids to be the smartest, the best, the brightest. While I believe you may well be all of those things, I’ll try to never push you into them. My highest hope for you is that you grow up as a happy and well-adjusted girl who knows that she’s loved.
Eight Months
Wednesday, May 25, 2005 —
Maya’s eight-month birthday was Monday, and I’m amazed at how old she is already!
Things to remember:
  • She babbles and coos all day, every day…except for when she’s asking to be held, which is OFTEN.
  • She doesn’t want to nap unless I’m holding her.
  • She smiles. A lot. Yesterday, the gal who runs childcare at my gym commented on how much she’s changed, and how much fun she is to watch. (yay!)
  • She’s still perfectly average for milestones — it’s as if she’s read the book on baby development. Oh! I’m supposed to start crawling sometime soon. Better get on with that.
  • She’s learning to demand her way, so crying isn’t always a simple communication of needs anymore. Sometimes, it’s flat-out manipulation. I’m trying to learn to distinguish between cries.
  • Most of all…she’s an angel, a doll-baby, and the light of my life. I can’t imagine not having her around!
  • Weight
    Filed under: Maya, Stats
    Tuesday, May 3, 2005 —
    By the way, at the doctor’s office, they weighed Maya at 13 pounds, 12 ounces — with clothes on — so she was likely right about 13-1/2 pounds.
