Growth Spurt

Seemingly overnight, Maya has grown LEGS. She ate like a horse yesterday…guess now I know why!

She was lounging in her saucer eating a Zweiback. Think perhaps it’s time to raise the saucer to the next notch?

Much better. I had an idea that she might be about to shoot up again. Any time I actually see something resembling a double chin on Maya, within days, it’s gone, and she’s taller.

Teeth!

Whoops — I almost forgot to blog this — Maya’s first teeth finally poked through yesterday! The two bottom ones are just barely above the surface now, and she’s experimenting with all kinds of new babble sounds as a result. She’s also toyed with clamping down on me at the end of meals…OW. Whether she means for it to be the end of a meal or not, once that happens, dinner is OVER.

To Blog or Not To Blog?

Saturday, June 11, 2005 —

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve seriously considered starting a second blog — one that would focus on what’s on my mind, my thoughts on life, and the mess that is (well, will be) dating as a single mother…assuming I ever actually start dating. I have such mixed feelings about it.

On the one hand, starting a second journal — one that I could keep mostly anonymous — would be freeing. I could write about anyone and anything, without the worry that friends or family might take offense. It would keep this blog more purely a blog for Maya.

On the other hand, life is LIFE. It’s messy. It’s real. Is there any reason that I shouldn’t just let it loose? I fear that if I took the “reality” moments away from this blog (like this one, or maybe this one), it would become a little too perfect and Stepford. Ugh…don’t want that.

Thoughts or comments anyone?

Came across this quiz via Jesus Outside the Box, a blog I found recently (and am enjoying immensely so far). Yeah, these results sound about right. The only problem I have is that here in Colorado Springs, I’m not having much luck finding anything that might look like a Postmodern Evangelical church. The one I’ve visited a couple times strikes me as Charismatic, dressed up in Postmodern clothing…but still basically closer to Fundie than I’m looking for. Vanguard’s close ties to Focus on the Family tell me quite a bit.

As much as I’ve enjoyed the services at Vanguard, the basic school of thought at First Congregational (Liberal/Classical type) seems to suit me better. It’s too traditional for my tastes in form and music, but I don’t find myself having such a disconnect of beliefs there.

The photo below is of a fellow named Brian McLaren, who is apparently the posterchild for Postmodern Christianity. I haven’t read any of his books…yet…but have read a few quotes from them in Donald Miller’s books and on some of the blogs I’ve picked up recently. Looks like he’s someone I might enjoy.

My results:
You scored as Emergent/Postmodern. You are Emergent/Postmodern in your theology. You feel alienated from older forms of church, you don’t think they connect to modern culture very well. No one knows the whole truth about God, and we have much to learn from each other, and so learning takes place in dialogue. Evangelism should take place in relationships rather than through crusades and altar-calls. People are interested in spirituality and want to ask questions, so the church should help them to do this.

What was that I said? Not MY baby?

Yesterday, my friend Amy posted some hysterical photos of Jessica discovering and trying out dog food. Loved the photos, and I thought they were hillarious, but not something I’d have to worry about. After all, my dogs eat in their crates, and I pick up their food after. No problem, right?

Weeeeellllll…not so fast, smarty-pants.

When the dogs get treats, I give Katie one, then hand Clay two (he takes them away), then give Katie her second. Clay’s usually pretty good about guarding his food from Katie once he’s claimed it as his. Apparently, he isn’t guarding it from Maya. I turned around to see this.

Then this. As a good mama, I (but of course) TOOK AWAY THE DOG TREAT. I should know better…or at least have been prepared with something else just as exciting to trade.

Here’s the immediate reaction. So distraught!

Just look at those tears. There were even more where those came from before I FINALLY got poor Little Miss appeased.

Ah, the wonders of Zwieback toast. Not (quite) as messy as a biter biscuit, thank god.

Clay asks, “Um…since you took MY treat, mind if I try yours?”

First Visit to the Pool

Wednesday, June 8, 2005 —

Maya and I made a quick stop at the pool today. While she thought her float was a great thing on land, she was less than impressed with it in the water. On land, though, it looked like a great prop for trying to stand up!

So, you swear this gets more fun later, mom?

What you can’t see in these photos is that even with a size 3/6mo bikini, I had to safety pin the waist of the bottoms in TWO INCHES. I can’t believe this, but I think I’m going to have to buy her a 0/3mo swimsuit…eek!
