Proud papa Aaron holding the newest love of his life, his baby daughter.

Having one of the prettiest newborn babies ever (not that I’m biased or anything), I find that it takes a lot for me to think another newborn is beautiful. This baby IS BEAUTFUL. Of course, with such good-looking parents, that’s no huge surprise.

Things to Remember

Feeling a nursing baby slow, then stop. Looking down to make eye contact and hear her say, “Heeeyyyyyyy…..hiiiiiiii,” with a big smile.

Watching her go back to eating, satisfied that she has my full attention.

Seven Months

Note the pudge under the chin.
She’s even getting a belly!

Maya has absolutely sprouted in the past week…I did the weigh me, weigh us method of checking her weight this morning, and she’s now 13 pounds, 6 ounces (13.4lbs) per my likely-unreliable scale. That’s a pound heavier than her six month check, which was only three weeks ago, yay! I noticed this morning that she now has a bit of a belly, and her 3/6mo pants are even snug. Amazing. Last week was the week for new tricks (sitting up, which she now does like a pro), so this week was all about getting bigger.

Next (so far) seems to be lunging out from a sitting position, which at this point means planting her face on the ground, ouch. What I’d LIKE to be next is learning to sit herself up, but for now she seems content to fall over, and yell for me to sit her back up again.

Scott and Maya go back and forth in a dialog of varied screeches. The exchange ends as the dogs’ wrestling match becomes much more interesting to Maya…

While all the stuff around drives me insane, Maya’s enjoying having Scott around — it keeps it from being all-mama-all-the-time-boring.

For those who’ve asked: Scott is NOT Maya’s father, and no, we’re not involved romantically. That ship sailed LONG ago. In a week, a gal he dated in Thailand (an American teaching English) flies in, then they take off for a camping tour of New Mexico and Arizona.

Crippling Religion

A post by the Angry Professor really got me thinking earlier this evening. So much of the childhood she recounted sounded familiar to me, and I agree with her about the results.

Religious or superstitious indoctrination cripples a young person’s mind. It takes away a child’s confidence that he can achieve things for himself and improve his condition, and leaves him fearful and helpless.

This sounds pretty accurate from what I experienced; just add to that: neurotic, depressed, and anxious. I also suffered from a chronic case of trying-too-hard-to-be-liked. I’ve written probably five or so pages’ worth of thoughts on this tonight, but they’re pretty disorganized and rambling. Once I sort through my thoughts and feelings, I might actually post some of it.

Baby Herrick Shimmies Into the World

Oh my god…one of my favorite people in the world became a daddy this weekend, several weeks early! Baby girl Herrick (name to be announced next MONTH in a naming ceremony) is stunning, and I’m just about crying for happiness.

Congratulations to Aaron and Angelique on their baby girl, born Sunday, April 17, at 5:50pm — 6 pounds, 7 ounces and 19 inches long!

She’s gorgeous — probably one of the prettiest newborn babies I’ve seen. Photo proof coming soon when (if) I get permission from the new proud papa. Time to get myself in gear and visit Houston to see this little princess.

I can’t believe it’s been 15-1/2 years (damn, I’m getting old) since Aaron moved into a dorm room across the hall from me at U of Houston. Back then, we called him “Surf” because he was from California. Of course, he was from the Bay Area, but we didn’t let that little piece of trivia sway our uninformed application of nickname…

Every time I think that we’re nearing the end of the age of eternal spit-up, a day like today appears. I mean, c’mon! We haven’t even needed bibs that much lately! (Of course, I have been chaging clothes more often…)

Today, the volcano erupts at least every five minutes. I’m not even bothering to change my clothes yet.

Changing Overnight

Amazing. Just yesteday, I was impressed that Maya could sit up for a few moments unsupported. Today, she’s nearly a pro.

With her newfound balance, a giraffe/blocks toy from Mark & Rhonda is now fascinating.

Ooooh…what IS this?

Give me a hint what to do with this?

Okay, so the block goes where?

She never did quite figure out how to put the block into the giraffe, but hey…it’s only day one.

Sitting Up - Slideshow

Maya is finally sitting up, even if it is only for a few seconds/minutes at a time. Instead of video, I played with my camera’s burst mode, where it takes tons of pictures all in a row. Something about this reminds me of those flip books we used to make in grade school…
